Climbing, downsized: Bouldering presents tough challenges close to the ground
LANCING, Tenn. - Lara Souza arrived at the bouldering area in the morning just as the icicles were melting off the rocks. Climbing in blue jeans and a sweater, she focused on a sequence of moves that brought her to an overhanging roof - a seemingly insurmountable obstacle even for someone like Souza, who took her share of gymnastics lessons while growing up in Brazil.
Five great Smokies fall hikes
Newfound Gap to Charlies Bunion along the Appalachian Trail, 8 miles roundtrip: One of the most scenic hikes in the Smokies, and especially nice in cold weather when the humidity drops and visibility improves. Charlies Bunion is a rock outcropping with panoramic views. From the Newfound Gap parking lot, head north on the A.T.
Sugarland Mountain perfect for longer hike
If you've done a couple of seven- or eight-mile hikes and you've been flirting with the idea of a longer one, Sugarland Mountain is a good place to start.
Some notes on backcountry camping
Backcountry camping is one of the best ways to experience the Great Smoky Mountains. However, backcountry campers must be prepared for their endeavors and must follow the backcountry rules. Below are a few guidelines about backcountry camping. These guidelines are meant only to be a quick introduction to backcountry camping, not a substitute for backcountry knowledge or consultation with park rangers about your trip.
It may not be lap of luxury, but backcountry shelters are improving
Times are a'changing in the backcountry. Anyone who has spent a cold night listening to mice scurry about his head or the sounds of sleep from strangers will know what is said here is true.
Safety tips for paddlers
Although rafting is a fun sport, it can also be very dangerous if the right precautions are not taken. Rafters must remember to follow guidelines while in the water to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Below you can find a list of guidelines from the Safety Code of the American Whitewater Affiliation to follow while rafting.
The six river difficulty classifications
This is the American version of a rating system used to compare river difficulty throughout the world. This system is not exact; rivers do not always fit easily into one category, and regional or individual interpretations may cause misunderstandings. It is no substitute for a guidebook or accurate first-hand descriptions of a run.
Ocoee River travel tips
The Ocoee Scenic Byway is southwest of Knoxville. Take I-75 to Cleveland, and take Exit 20 to U.S. Highway 64 which becomes the scenic byway. An alternative also is to take U.S. 411 through Maryville to Highway 64 at Ocoee. There is construction at various points along U.S. 411 where it is being four-laned. It's about 82 miles to Cleveland, and about another 8 miles along U.S. 64 before you get to the Scenic Byway. Allow about two hours to get there.
Fishing guidelines
Fishing is permitted year-round in the park, but a Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license is required. Either state license is valid throughout the park and no trout stamp is required. Licenses may be purchased in nearby towns. A special permit is required for fishing on the Cherokee reservation.
Whitewater Rafting
Bryson City and Swain County contain four major rivers including the Nantahala River. Fontana Lake also lies within the county's bouandries, making Swain County and Bryson City ideal places for whitewater rafting and other water sports.
